Demna Gvasalia called his aw18 collection ‘The Elephant in the Room’—the elephant in question being the subject of Martin Margiela, and how much Gvasalia has been influenced by the re appropriation methods of the man whose house he worked for between 2009 and 2012. A period Margiela himself had already left the company he founded.

‘I went back to my roots as a designer, I went back to Margiela. I wanted to show what Margiela means for me, and for Vetements. It’s an approach, it’s not a person. It’s a way of loving clothes, breaking the rules with those clothes. And that’s what we did.’ Demna Gvasalia.

spring summer 1990 presentation of Martin margiela took place in a playground. Margiela asked the kids’ parents for permission to use the playground. The parents approved on the condition their kids could visit the show. He asked the children to make drawings for  the invitation, as you can see on images above. Demna Gvasalia went to the kindergarten next door to the Vetements studio in Zurich and set the children the project of making T-shirts illustrating their idea of ‘the elephant in the room’. both photographs are published at dazeddigital.com, made by lucie rox.
