Kate Elson had her first magazine cover on the February 1997 issue of Vogue Italia, photographed by Steven Meisel, with the collaboration of Pat McGrath, she sported a special look styled expressly for her which earned her the nickname ‘Le Freak’: shaved eyebrows, alabaster skin and red hair.

In 1998 she was named model of the year which was the start of a non-stop career. In 2002 for the first time in an interview to British Vogue she spoke openly of her eating disorders and declared she intended to fight fiercely her fears and weaknesses, which caused her bulimia and anorexia issues.

in 2005 she married White Stripes singer Jack White, with whom she has two children. In the meantime, her modeling career was still going strong: In 2006 she moved to Nashville with the family, and opened a vintage boutique, ‘Venus and Mars’; in a tranquil, peaceful and remote setting she could dedicate completely to her first album, The Ghost who walks, released in 2010. Her musical career aside, she kept on working in fashion.
